2005 / 2006 Season Transfers

In / Out Player Position From / To Cost Verdict
In Maniche Midfielder Dynamo Moscow Loan Brought in to cover in Midfield while others are away at the African Nations Cup. He is best remembered for his spectacular goal against Holland in Euro2004.
In Michael Essien Midfielder Lyon £26m Supposed to be the next Steven Gerrard. Will need to be if he is to become a regular part of the midfield. At £26m let's hope that he is worth the money.
In Shaun Wright-Phillips Midfielder Man City £21m A very talented English winger who will be a great asset to Chelsea Football Club.
In Lassana Diarra Midfielder Le Havre Undisclosed A 20 year old midfielder bought from French 2nd division side Le Havre that is to be groomed into a long term successor to Claude Makelele.
In Carlton Cole Striker Aston Villa Return from loan He showed some promise in the 2002/2003 season before being loaned off to Charlton and Villa. It will be interesting to se how the England U21 player will progress at Chelsea in the season ahead.
In Hernan Crespo Striker AC Milan Return from loan Had a good spell last season on loan at AC Milan. Chelsea's inability to buy a top quality striker so far has led to him being brought back even though he wished to stay at AC Milan. Crespo scored 12 goals for Chelsea with limited appearances two seasons ago.
In Asier Del Horno Defender Atletico Bilbao £8m Brought in as much needed cover for the left back position as Wayne Bridge is not likely to return to first team action until the New Year.
Out Alexei Smertin Defender / Midfielder Dynamo Moscow £1m A fringe player who only spent one season out of three with the Chelsea squad. The other two seasons were on loan to Portsmouth and Charlton.
Out Wayne Bridge Defender Fulham Loan Wants regular first team football to help his chances of being in the World Cup squad for the summer.
Out Tiago Midfielder Lyon £7m Slightly supprised that this player has been sold on so quickly. Perhaps it is now the trend to sell players after one season if they are not instant hits.
Out Jiri Jarosik Midfielder Birmingham City Loan Was brought in mid way through last season as cover for Makelele. Only had limited appearances and will most likely be sold after loan spell.
Out Alexei Smertin Midfielder Charlton Loan Only had limited appearances for Chelsea last season after returning from a season long loan spell at Portsmouth.
Out Mateja Kezman Striker Atletico Madrid £5.3m Not really given a proper run in the first team last season. After only one season, scoring only six goals he has moved on.
Out Juan Veron Midfielder Inter Milan Loan It's a shame that Chelsea have not sold this player yet. He is now on loan to Inter Milan for another season.
Out Scott Parker Midfielder Newcastle £6.5m A good midfield player that always seemed to be injured or out of favour at Chelsea. Did not make ten appearances last season. Some questioned his move to Chelsea and this would seem to prove that they were right to do so.
Out Mikell Forsell Striker Birmingham City £3m Has spent much of his Chelsea career on loan at Birmingham and was never likely to return for first team action at Chelsea.
